UL Subject 2755 certification program

Get your server facility in compliance with the world's first standard for modular data centers

In the world of cloud computing, modular data centers play a vital role as they signify a key and flexible data infrastructure for the next generation.

Modular Data Centers (MDCs)

The more common type of Data Center fits data center equipment (servers, storage and networking equipment, along with support equipment) into a standard ISO shipping container or similar large enclosure, which is then transported to a desired location.

Modular data centers (a. k. a. "Containerized Data Centers (CDCs)") typically come outfitted with their own cooling systems.  Their construction, installation and use results in a unique hybrid piece of equipment.  These Data Centers can be used to expand the capacity of existing data centers, quickly set up a new/emergency data center, or when several are used together form a large scale data center.

To answer the needs from the information technology industry stakeholders such as equipment manufacturers, users and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), UL developed the world’s first safety standard for modular data centers – UL subject 2755 outline of investigation (OOI). The subject not only covers the installation of servers in a CDC, but also addresses the safety of power distribution, cooling systems and smoke/fire protection systems – basically all of these being used together as a system in one "container" and then viewed as a product that only needs to be evaluated for proper installation in the field.

UL is also setting up a Standards Technical Panel (STP) following our American National Standards Institute (ANSI) process for the publication of UL Standard 2755 as an ANSI Standard. In the international arena, UL has initiated a proposal through the IEC Standards development process to include this in the relevant IEC Standard.

Reliability
UL has its own experienced engineers who understand the safety standard for modular data centers very well. We are participating in the standard development and are able to share the first hand information with our customers.

Intergrity
UL represents intergrity and trust, building on its mission of working for a safer world since 1894. The conformance to UL's safety standards enables your products to gain worldwide acceptance and recognition.

Total Solutions
UL provides consolidated and flexible certification service in order to save your time on complex MDC applications.
