Update Your Laser Equipment Certifications Now for Continued Market Access

The second edition of the IEC safety standard for laser products, designated IEC 60825-1: 2007, Edition 2 - "Safety of laser products - Part 1: Equipment classification and requirements," has recently been published. This document defines the classification, labeling and safety compliance requirements of laser equipment.
The new edition introduces important changes to manufacturing requirements and measurement conditions, which will affect laser equipment manufacturers. LEDs were removed from the scope of IEC 60825-1 (LED radiation hazards are now intended to be covered by IEC 62471 - "Photobiological safety of lamps and lamp systems").
Any international UL Marks issued on or after Sept. 1, 2010 will require the supporting CB Test Report and Certificate to be based on the new second edition of IEC 60825-1. Suppliers of laser products should contact UL as soon as possible to receive assistance in identifying required changes and their products as compliant where necessary in order to maintain access to international markets.
