Electric vehicle infrastructure

Driving the Smart Grid

In just five years, there will be as many as 1 million electric vehicles on the road in the United States alone. That growth means opportunity: new products used in the manufacture of electric vehicles, charging stations in the home and on the road, charging cables and more.

But the growth of electric vehicles also means changes in power usage. Where traditional vehicles rely on fossil fuels, the new fleet of electric vehicles will connect to the electrical grid and benefit from the efficiencies of the Smart Grid. One result of this shift: by 2050, electric vehicles could reduce global greenhouse gas emissions by more than 45 metric tons each year.

Electric vehicles (EVs) will depend on the Smart Grid, a new type of power-delivery infrastructure. And as more electric vehicles and related devices become available, building confidence in the safety of the technology is key to growing the market. For consumers, the presence of third-party certification is the cornerstone of buying with confidence. UL is working with manufacturers to develop safer EV equipment, and is now recognized as the premier third-party testing organization for the industry. For EV equipment, the UL Mark delivers peace of mind.

And as the electric vehicle industry steadily evolves, UL is helping support growth by using UL Standards for the certification of charging systems and grid connection equipment. For more than 115 years, UL has been working to educate consumers, support manufacturers and regulators in their pursuit of safer products; our approach to EV infrastructure is no different. UL has extensive experience testing EV charging products, and as Smart Grid technology evolves, UL continues to develop new Standards to make electric vehicles safer. Partnering with UL for third-party certification and consulting helps consumers and regulators feel confident in the safety and reliability of electric vehicle products. With UL certification, the road to safer EV infrastructure is a smooth drive.
