Alarm system certificate

The alarm system Certificate is the UL Mark for programs designed to meet the needs of alarm service providers, their customers, and interested stakeholders. It is the alarm company's declaration that the system will be installed, maintained, tested and monitored in accordance with applicable codes and standards.

UL visits every Listed alarm company at least once a year to countercheck the compliance of alarm service covered by UL Certificates and to verify that controls are in place to assure continued compliance.

 Elements of a certificate

Each certificate specifies:

  • Type of alarm service
  • Name and address of the property protected by the service
  • Name and address of the alarm service company responsible for issuing the certificate
  • Description of the equipment installed, its coverage and other protection details
  • Date that declaration of conformity began (issued date)
  • Date that declaration of conformity ceases (expiration date

Every certificate also carries a unique serial number to assist with traceability.

  Notes:

  • Long term alarm service is often covered by a series of UL Certificates with coordinated issue & expiration dates
  • Certificates can be cancelled at any time by the issuing alarm company. While Certificates are occasionally cancelled due to noncompliance, more often, cancellations are caused by a disruption in the relationship between alarm company and its customer. When an alarm company can no longer assure continued compliance, it is in its best interested to cancel the Certificate.

 Sample certificates

Beginning in Jan-2012, the watermark/background format for UL Alarm Certificates changed to give Alarm Certificates a look and feel that is consistent with all other UL Certificates.

At the same time, UL started delivering Certificates in electronic pdf format when requested through our on-line portal, ULwebCerts. Immediate delivery at reduced cost should be a positive change for all stakeholders. However, it does make physical Certificate printing a local matter and subject to some variation in appearance.

The specific paper, ink, and printer make & model used will impact the color hue and text sharpness. Such variation in appearance should be expected and is not necessarily a sign of a forged or counterfeit document. Going forward, background watermarks will be grey in order to minimize local color variations.
