Market access for wind turbines

Wind

UL has acquired DEWI, an international wind energy measurment leader, and DEWI-OCC an accredited DAKKS (German accreditation) certifier of onshore and offshore wind facilities. The addition of applied research, development of measuring methods and wind turbine testing plus onshore and offshore wind facility certification services enhances UL's offering to the wind energy field.

UL's wind energy services now include:

  • UL Certification for overall system
  • UL Certification mark for assemblies, control systems, inverters and converters
  • Field Evaluation program
  • Site assessment
    • Wind Measurement - placement and calibration of anemometers
    • Energy Yield Assessment - measurement of wind turbine power curves plus assessment of wind climate at site in line with EN ISO/IEC 17025 and MEASNET
    • Wind Farm Micrositing - range of services from site selection to analysis of existing wind measurement data to calculation of energy yield to optimization of wind farm configuration
  • Wind turbine assessment
    • Mechanical loads - measurement of mechanical loads of prototypes during operation. Results are used in design validation and certification of wind turbine series production
    • Power performance - measurement of wind turbine power curves allows owners to check whether a turbine conforms to supplier specifications
    • Acoustic noise/vibration - noise emissions are a limiting factor in the layout of a wind farm
  • Grid integration
    • Power quality - determines electrical characteristics and grid compatibility of wind turbines, solar inverters and other generation units/systems
    • Grid calculations - analysis of the behavior of wind turbines in case of a short-circuit in the grid
    • Grid code - assessment of electrical characteristics of wind farms including characteristics of wind turbines, cabling within and outside the wind farm, ther transformers and other installations
  • Due diligence
    • Lender's or Owner's engineer - analysis of complete wind farm project including all planning, financing, building permit and contract documents to minimize project risk for investors, developers and owners
    • Project monitoring - project review before and during implementation plus project evaluation after completion
  • Turbine inspection
    • Damage analyses - independent assessment of curent technical state, clarification of technical issues and initial damages with recommendations in a written report
    • Periodic inspections - after commissioning to establish snag list before signing the approval certificate, before the end of warranty period, during life of the wind farm/turbine. Recommended every 2 to 4 years
    • Specific inspections - carried out on main components
      • Gearboxes and bearings
      • Drive train
      • Generator
      • Generator cooling systems
      • Blades and/or blade lightning protection systems
  • Research services
    • Research and studies
    • Training and seminars
    • Offshore wind energy
