Market Surveillance Department
The Market Surveillance Department works to protect the integrity of UL certifications by investigating Product Incident Reports and by proactive Market Surveillance investigations on field-obtained product samples.
Product Incident Reports
UL's Market Surveillance staff open Product Incident Reports to investigate concerns about UL certified products that are submitted to UL by consumers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and authorities having jurisdiction. When a Product Incident Report is opened, UL Market Surveillance staff verify the concern, work to determine the root cause, and take appropriate action to resolve the concern. Market Surveillance staff are located across the globe, helping to assure that the UL Mark remains the trusted brand that it has been for over one hundred years.
Market Surveillance Program
The Market Surveillance Department also conducts proactive annual Market Surveillance on products authorized to bear a UL Mark. Under the Market Surveillance Program, samples of UL certified products are purchased from the marketplace and subjected to testing and construction reviews to determine if the products comply with UL requirements. Product Incident Reports are opened when non-compliant results are found. By evaluating whether products sold to the public comply with UL requirements, the Market Surveillance Department provides a check on UL's product certification and Field Service programs.
