UL is the key North American developer of safety-related EV Standards. We also actively cooperate with other standards developing organizations in sharing our EV safety expertise. A few of our contributions to EV safety standards include:

UL Electric Vehicle & Infrastructure Standards

Off-Board Standards

UL 62, Standard for Safety of Electric Vehicle Cable

This Standard covers electric vehicle cable constructed as described in, and Listed for use in accordance with Article 400 of ANSI/NFPA 70, "National Electrical Code." The cable is used to supply power, signal, and control to electric vehicles during the charging process. Electric vehicle cable consists of two or more insulated conductors, with or without grounding conductors, with an overall jacket.

UL 2202, Standard for Safety of Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging System Equipment

This standard covers charging system equipment, either conductive or inductive, intended for use with electric vehicles. The equipment can be located on or off board the vehicle. Off-board equipment is intended for indoor or outdoor use. This equipment is rated 600 V or less. For equipment located off the vehicle, the equipment is intended to be connected to the vehicle by means of a flexible cord and an electric vehicle connector, and intended for installation in accordance with ANSI/NFPA 70, "National Electrical Code."

UL 2231, Standard for Safety of Personnel Protection Systems for EV Supply Circuits

This Standard covers devices and systems intended for use in accordance with the National Electrical Code® (American National Standards Institute/National Fire Protection Association 70), to reduce the risk of electric shock to the user from accessible parts, in grounded or isolated circuits for charging EVs.

UL 2251, Standard for Safety of Plugs, Receptacles, and Couplers for EVs

This Standard covers plugs, receptacles, vehicle inlets, and connectors rated up to 800 amperes and up to 600 volts ac or dc, intended for conductive connection systems, for use with EVs in accordance with the National Electrical Code® for either indoor or outdoor nonhazardous locations.

UL Subject 2594, Subject Standard for Safety of Electric Vehicle (EV) Supply Equipment

This subject standard covers electric vehicle (EV) supply equipment, rated a maximum of 250 V ac, with a frequency of 60 Hz, and intended to provide power to an electric vehicle with an onboard charging unit. Subject 2594 covers electric vehicle supply equipment intended for use where ventilation is not required. The products covered by Subject 2594 include EV Power Outlets, EV cord sets and EV charging stations, Level 1 & 2. EV cord sets may be designated as portable cord sets or stationary cord sets and may be designated for indoor or outdoor use. EV charging stations may be designated as either movable or permanent charging stations and may be designated for indoor or outdoor use. The products covered by Subject 2594 are intended for use in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC), ANSI/NFPA 70. 

UL Subject 2735, Subject Standard for Safety of Electric Utility (Smart) Meters

This subject standard covers electric utility meters which measure, monitor, record, transmit, or receive electrical energy generation or consumption information. Meters covered by this outline of investigation may be provided with one or two-way communication, by means of power line carrier signals, telephone, cable, wireless communication, or other methods. These meters may be intended to be used as a standalone device or as part of an overall system such as an electric vehicle charging station.

On-Board Standards

UL Subject 458A, Subject Standard for Safety of Power Converters/Inverters for Electric Land Vehicles

This subject standard covers power converters and power inverters intended for use in electric vehicles. This subject standard covers fixed and stationary power converters having a nominal rating of 600 V or less, direct or alternating current. This subject standard also covers fixed, stationary and portable power inverters having a dc input and a 120 or 240 V ac output. These converters/inverters are intended for use within electric land vehicles where not directly exposed to outdoor conditions. This subject standard also covers converters/inverters that are additionally intended to charge batteries

UL 1004-1, Standard for Safety for Rotating Electrical Machines - General Requirements

This standard covers motors intended as the prime mover and installed in or on vehicles for highway use, such as passenger automobiles, buses, trucks, vans, bicycles, motorcycles and the like. These motors have been investigated for construction and operation at rated output. They have additionally been investigated for the severity and profile of shock and vibration likely to be encountered by motors mounted in road vehicles. This information, together with other conditions of use, such as mounting position, are marked on the product and/or detailed in the manufacturer\'s installation instructions furnished with the product.

UL 2202, Standard for Safety of Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging System Equipment

This standard covers charging system equipment, either conductive or inductive, intended for use with electric vehicles. The equipment can be located on or off board the vehicle. This equipment is rated 600 V or less.

UL 2580, Standard for Batteries for Use in Electric Vehicles

This standard covers battery packs intended for use in electric vehicles. These battery packs are ready for installation into an electrical vehicle and consist of component cell models contained in a supplemental rigid enclosure, with battery-protective devices that may be located either within the battery pack enclosure or provided with their own enclosure and located external to the battery pack. The battery packs are secondary (rechargeable) type and range in size and shape and are suitable for various electric vehicle (EV), hybrid electric vehicle (HEV), and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) applications. Various battery chemistries are included, such as lithium-ion, nickel-metal hydride, lead acid, etc. These batteries have been investigated for potential electric shock, fire and explosion hazard.

UL 2733, Outline of Investigation for Surface Vehicle On-Board Cable

This standard covers single-conductor or single, coaxial cable intended for the connection of components in an electric vehicle. The cable is rated 60, 75, 90 or 105°C (140, 167, 194 or 221°F), 300 or 600 V ac or dc, -30°C (-22°F), oil resistant, water resistant, and suitable for exposure to battery acid.

UL 2734, Outline of Investigation for Connectors for Use with On-Board Electrical Vehicle (EV) Charging Systems

This standard covers component connectors intended to interconnect both communication and power-circuit conductors rated up to 30 A and up to 600 V ac or dc within an on-board electric vehicle charging system.
