UL listing document
UL is launching a new program for product documentation as a step to being a world-class service provider. This exciting new program streamlines the Certification process to help you get your products to market faster, and to provide documentation users with easily accessible information!
The benefits of streamlining are achieved through a UL Listing Document (ULLD), which you prepare for required products. The ULLD is created to communicate the scope of service for a product submitted for UL Listing in a clear, effective format that minimizes UL's overall documentation review time. The benefits of the ULLD are two-fold: documentation users see focused, accessible information and you, our customer, experience service levels that increase in response to the reduction in required UL Listing investigation review time.
Rationale
Users of fire alarm, releasing and smoke control equipment alerted us to expanding documentation needs of various users, including authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), designers, installers, Certificated Service Auditors and others. They need and want accurate information about the features, functionality, programming options, compatibilities, etc., of your product in relation to the scope of the product Listing investigation in the most convenient and expedient way possible.
UL currently invests a significant percentage of its product investigation time in documentation review, which is conducted by UL engineers. Inefficiencies in the review process mean longer wait-times for the completion of other Listing investigation engineering tasks. Ultimately, the process slows and service is impacted.
The challenge presented to us was to find a way to speed the process to serve you better while maintaining the quality inherent in our mission.

The ULLD will contain the following information:
The ULLD allows a level of individual flexibility while maintaining a framework that facilitates a minimized review time (please see attached document). The basic layout provides the user community with necessary information in a reliable format and extends the benefit of consistent documentation norms to UL staff, who can use this advantage to move the process forward.
The transition
The transition to the ULLD will be gradual, with product documentation either being phased in when any significant change is made to the product or documentation or upon specific request to phase in the ULLD. It is UL's intention to have ULLDs for all Listed products by the end of 2009; however, this program is already being phased into use for appropriate projects.
