Why IEC 62368-1

Early learning and preparation

The introduction of the IEC 62368-1 CB certification gives you the opportunity to learn about the new 62368-1 Standard and the Hazard Based Safety Engineering (HBSE) concepts upon which it is based in order to prepare for the challenges of its ultimate full implementation.  While the First Edition is currently optional, the Second Edition of IEC 62368-1 is expected to be published by early 2013 to eventually replace all current standards for information and communications technology equipment and consumer electronics.  It is important for manufacturers to come to grips with the HBSE approach underlying the new standard in preparation for the transition to the new Edition.

Flexibility

It may also give you the opportunity to take advantage of the increased flexibility offered by the new standard, particularly towards new technology, through its emphasis on safety design in the early product development phase, as compared to the prescriptive approach of the existing standards.

How UL can work for you

Expertise

UL has played a leading role in the development of the new standard as a member of various national committees in the United States and Canada involved in its development, giving us unequalled in-depth knowledge and experience of its concepts and application.

Education

We have already been educating the industry on the new standard for over two years since the IEC version was first published – and we will continue to be the knowledge leader for the standard as it evolves.  Our educational offerings on the new standard include public and private seminars and workshops, technical briefs and a White Paper, as well as engineering advisory services and regular updates on our website.

Ongoing support

As a member of TC 108, the Technical Committee responsible for the ongoing development of the standard, UL is perfectly–placed to guide manufacturers through the process of compliance with the new standard as it becomes mandatory.
