North American certification

UL currently offers North America component Recognition for appliance type switches as follows:

Special use switches (WOYR2, WOYR8) -- UL 1054

  • This category includes manually operable and mechanical operable non-industrial switches and replacement switches.
  • Electrical ratings 0 to 250V up to 60A and 251 to 600V up to 30A  and 2 HP maximum for alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) or both (AC and DC).
  • Switches covered under this category are for factory installation only and are not intended for field installation.
  • The standards used under this category are:
    • ANSI/UL 1054, the Standard for Special-Use Switches
    • CSA-C22.2 No. 55, the Standard for Special Use Switches

UL 1054 will be replaced by UL 61058-1. Learn more.

Appliance switches (WKKY2, WKKY8) -- UL 61058-1

  • This category includes manually operable and mechanical operable non-industrial switches, mechanical or electronic.
  • Electrical ratings 0 to 480V up to 63A and 2hp.
  • Switches covered under this category are for factory installation only and are not intended for field installation.
  • Individual Recognitions indicate the endurance cycles with a temperature rise less than 30°C (suitable for use in traditional UL end-product standards) or less than 55C (suitable for use in UL end-product standards harmonized to IEC standards).
  • The standards used under this category are:
    • UL 61058-1,  the Standard for Switches for Appliances -- Part 1: General Requirements
    • CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 61058-1, the Standard for Switches for Appliances -- Part 1: General Requirements."
  • Since the UL 61058 is harmonized with IEC 61058, UL can efficiently help customers obtain additional marks beyond North America. Learn more.

Membrane switches (WHSM2) -- UL 2557

In addition to traditional appliance switches, UL offers North American certification for membrane type switches.

  • This category covers membrane switches intended to be actuated by human activity for factory installation in devices or appliances. The switches covered under this category are rated for ac, dc, or both, and may be rated up to 30 V rms maximum. Current (milliamps) limits are a maximum of 5000 mA (5 A).
  • The basic requirements used to investigate products in this category are contained in UL Subject 2557, "Outline of Investigation for Membrane Switches."
