Oil-fired equipment -- products and standards
UL can evaluate oil-fired equipment including oil-fired burners, furnaces, boilers and water heaters. Tests can be conducted with various oil grades including type numbers 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6, kerosene, and waste oil. In addition, UL can evaluate multi-fuel appliances such as gas-oil fired burners and oil-solid fuel equipment. UL can also investigate equipment to Canadian and global requirements.
Oil-fired equipment is evaluated to a number of UL Standards, including the following:
| Standard | Title |
| UL 296 | Oil burners |
| UL 296A | Waste oil-burning air-heating appliances |
| UL 307A | Liquid fuel-burning heating appliances for manufactured homes and recreational vehicles |
| UL 726 | Oil-fired boiler assemblies |
| UL 727 | Oil-fired central furnaces |
| UL 729 | Oil-fired floor furnaces |
| UL 730 | Oil-fired wall furnaces |
| UL 731 | Oil-fired unit heaters |
| UL 732 | Oil-fired storage tank water heaters |
| UL 896 | Oil burning stoves |
| UL 2096 | Oil burning assemblies with emission reduction equipment |
| 2106 | Field erected boiler assemblies |
For Canadian certifications, the applicable Canadian requirements are applied.
For evaluation to requirements in other countries, CE Mark, or for other product types and combination fuel types, other Standards are applicable. UL can outline these requirements for manufacturers.
Testing logistics
- Location -- UL has fully equipped laboratories in several locations throughout North America, Europe and Asia Pacific where testing of these appliances can be conducted. UL also offers a program where testing can be conducted at the equipment manufacturer's facility and witnessed on site by a UL representative. UL can bring the necessary test equipment to the site, or the manufacturer's calibrated equipment may be used. Manufacturers who elect to conduct testing at their facility must comply with UL's data acceptance program (DAP).
- Specialty testing -- In some cases, a specialty product is built for a specific installation or customer. If requested, UL can conduct a field evaluation of these products and apply a UL field evaluated product Mark.
