Gas and wood-fired hearth -- products and standards
UL can evaluate gas-fired or solid-fuel fired hearth product appliances to the applicable U.S., Canadian and global requirements. This includes factory-built fireplaces, fireplace stoves, room heaters, pellet stoves and fireplace inserts. We can evaluate gas-only fired units, solid-fuel units, or units that use a combination of gas and other heat sources such as wood, coal or other solid-fuel. We also evaluate outdoor gas or solid-fuel appliances such as fireplaces or log sets.

Testing logistics
- Location -- UL has fully equipped laboratories in several locations throughout North America, Europe and Asia Pacific where testing of these appliances can be conducted. UL also offers a program where testing can be conducted at the equipment manufacturer's facility and witnessed on site by a UL representative. UL can bring the necessary test equipment to the site, or the manufacturer's calibrated equipment may be used. Manufacturers who elect to conduct testing at their facility must comply with UL's data acceptance program (DAP).
- Specialty testing -- In some cases, a specialty product is built for a specific installation or customer. If requested, UL can conduct a field evaluation of these products and apply a UL field evaluated product Mark.
