Environment Chamber Testing and Chemical Analysis

UL Environment is the world leader in using environmental chamber technology to characterize chemical and particle emissions from all types of products. Our global laboratories are fully accredited for all ISO and ASTM test methods for measuring chemical emissions from building products, furniture, and electronic products. UL Environment can also apply our testing expertise to measure emissions from any product type and determine acceptability for indoor air quality and user exposure.

Benefits of Product Emissions Testing and Chemical Analysis

Manufacturers pursue product emissions testing to:

  • Demonstrate compliance with purchasing specifications, green product rating systems, and green building codes
  • Minimize the risk of litigation associated with chemical exposure
  • Minimize odor complaints for their products
  • Achieve third party certification as a low emitting product (GREENGUARD or ecoINSTITUT Certification)

Types of Product Emissions Testing and Chemical Analysis

Methods and Standards

UL Environment is accredited to conduct testing according to the following test protocols:

  • ASTM D 5116
  • ASTM D 6670
  • CA Department of Public Health Standard Method for the Testing and Evaluation of Volatile Organic Chemical Emissions from Indoor Sources Using Environmental Chambers (CA Section 01350)

Exposure Risk

UL Environment can use data from your emissions test to assess potential inhalation exposure risk for your products. We work with manufacturers to determine normal usage patterns and then use this data to determine potential acute and chronic exposure for normal users. Data can be used to show compliance with allowable levels for occupational exposure, labeling for CA Proposition 65, irritation, and odor.

Odor Assessment

In addition to performing quantitative odor assessment using our emissions data, UL Environment can conduct odor evaluations for your products using a human sensory odor panel to smell and rate your products to determine potential for consumer acceptance.

Air Sampling Analysis

UL Environment helps building owners, facility managers, and third-party consultants resolve indoor air quality concerns in a variety of environments with general analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), microbial VOCs, aldehydes, and other air pollutants.
