IEC TC108 Issues FDIS for Am 2 of IEC 60950-1, Ed 2

On January 18, 2013 IEC TC108 circulated the Final Draft International Standard (FDIS) for Amendment No. 2 of IEC 60950-1, Edition No. 2, Information technology equipment - Safety - Part 1: General requirements.

The FDIS has a two month voting period with a likely publication as an international standard (IS) later this Spring or early Summer.  Generally, only non-technical changes are permitted between the FDIS and its publication as an IS.

Among the more notable changes to be included in Amendment No. 2 are:

• Provision for allowing components complying with IEC 62368-1 to be used in equipment/systems covered by IEC 60950-1;
• Further clarification on the use of voltage dependent resistors (VDRs) in equipment/systems covered by IEC 60950-1;
• New markings for identifying ITE incorporating functional earthing;
• Clarification on the application of cemented joint requirements to printed boards;
• A new component requirement for portable secondary sealed cells & batteries including, Lithium-Ion, which requires compliance with IEC 62133;
• Further refinement of the component requirements for multi-layer insulating winding wires;
• Further refinement of the component requirements for IC current limiters.

As previously reported, IEC TC108 has made a decision that this Amendment will be the last amendment or edition of IEC 60950-1.  All current and future standards work for safety of ITE (Information Technology Equipment) is being undertaken under IEC 62368-1, the hazard-based standard that is replacing both IEC 60065 (AV Equipment) and IEC 60950-1 (ICT Equipment).

The FDIS is available for purchase as a ‘Pre-release’ standard at the IEC Webstore.

UL will continue to keep you updated on the progress of IEC 60950-1, including the pending work by the Technical Harmonization Committee (THC) to incorporate this latest IEC Amendment into CSA/UL 60950-1 as the next bi-national standard for Canada and the U.S. The CSA/UL version likely will be published in 2014.
