Staying competitive, Staying abreast of Changes

Updates on electromagnetic compatibility and wireless telecommunication regulations occurred around the world in the first half of 2011

In the modern age of rapid communications, wireless connectivity is so commonplace that mobile phone subscriptions have far exceeded fixed landline subscriptions in many countries.  Regulators and authorities in major markets around the world are constantly reviewing and updating existing legislation and standards to ensure that radio and wireless devices (including wireless LAN, Bluetooth, RFID, keyless systems, Zigbee, GSM, UMTS and similar wireless technologies) circulating in the markets meet their respective quality and safety standards.  They require that these products are properly designed, safe to use, do not disturb other equipment and are able to protect the users and bystanders from the possible adverse health effects of electromagnetic radiation.

Accordingly, radio/wireless equipment producers and manufacturers need to keep abreast of the changes in legislation and standards to ensure that their products will be market complaint at all times. UL, with a strong global presence and unrivalled market knowledge, understands all these changes.  In fact, being a leading expert in quality and safety standards, UL is engaged by various technical committees worldwide to help them review and set standards.

This High Tech Direct Special issue will highlight the changes that have occurred to standards for radio and wireless devices in major markets around the world during the first half of 2011.

Worldwide Updates

Role of UL

Most countries impose mandatory regulations for radio and wireless products imported into or sold in their markets, to protect the health and safety of the users and the public. With expertise and facilities in Asia, North America and Europe, plus office facilities in 60 countries, UL provides a one-stop International Market Access solution from training and education, planning and preparing documentation to testing for safety, EMC and wireless regulatory conformity, to obtaining the worldwide approvals needed for manufacturers to expand their businesses.

UL has our own experienced and accredited laboratories. Our test reports are recognized by many markets and countries across North America, Europe and Asia. UL is registered as a Telecommunication Certification Body (TCB)/ Foreign Certification Body (FCB) and is a Notified Body for the EMC & R&TTE Directives (2004/108/EC & 1999/5/EC). This allows manufacturers to obtain FCC, IC, Japan MIC certification and CE Expert Opinion in a short period of time.

Our depth of expertise in testing and compliance allows us to provide superior technical support to our clients and enables a smooth and fast transition through the certification process. This helps reduce time to market and the overall approvals cost.

For more than a century, UL has been one of the most recognized and trusted resources for product safety testing, certification and guidance. With our technical expertise, state-of-art laboratory facilities, industry experience and commitment to customer service, UL is well positioned to provide manufacturers the support they require in ensuring product compliance at all times amidst the fast changing regulatory environment.
