Witness test data program update
NOTE: This information is from a previously printed press release, newsletter, or other dated document. It is presented here for archival purposes only.
Since July, 2008, UL has required test equipment used for witness testing to comply with traceability requirements of ISO/IEC 17025 Clause 5.6.2.2. Client measurement equipment used for witness testing should be calibrated by an appropriately accredited third-party calibration laboratory.
Accreditation endorsements
When calibration laboratories issue calibration certificates and reports, they may only use the accreditation endorsement when the work covered is part of their scope of accreditation. Check that the work performed by an accredited calibration laboratory is within their scope of accreditation. An endorsed calibration certificate/report is evidence that the calibration is traceable.
The following mutual recognition agreements identify acceptable calibration laboratory accreditors:
- International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation MRA signatories -- A full listing of ILAC MRA signatories can be found at www.ilac.org/home.html. Please click on the "Membership" link and review the "Members by category" listings. You can find a complete listing of the signatories to the ILAC MRA under "Full Members."
- Asian Pacific Laboratory Accreditation Council MRA signatories -- A full listing of APLAC MRA signatories can be found at http://www.aplac.org/congrats.html
- European Accreditation Cooperation MRA signatories -- A full listing of EAC MRA signatories can be found at www.european-accreditation.org/content/mla/scopes.htm
Client equipment calibration records must demonstrate compliance with ISO/IEC 17025. Review an example of a calibration certificate and what needs to be provided to UL.
Using internal calibration resources
UL has established requirements for the use of internal resources to calibrate equipment in client laboratories as well as the use of external laboratories where no accredited calibration laboratories are available. Information is posted on the UL data acceptance program Web site.
Check the UL data acceptance program Web site for other valuable information, including contact information, tools, guidance and other useful program details.
