3rd Annual International Law Enforcement IP Crime Conference

INTERPOL, An Garda Síochána, and the Police Service of Northern Ireland, in partnership with Underwriters Laboratories, hosted the 2009 International Law Enforcement IP Crime Conference in Dublin, Ireland on September 29 through October 1, 2009.  The Conference was a huge success, bringing together 390 attendees from 44 countries.

UL's Bob Crane, in conjunction with the International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition (IACC), conducted training at the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission, located in Burien, WA on May 12th, 2009. More than 100 law enforcement personnel were in attendance, representing Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and local law enforcement officers.

On May 13th, Bob conducted two additional training sessions - a morning session at the Port of Seattle and an afternoon session at the Port of Tacoma. Training covered the authentication of UL Marks with an emphasis on UL's new gold holographic labels. UL offers our thanks to both ports for their past and continued support in assisting UL in the detection of unauthorized UL Marks.

The annual IACC Spring Conference was held at Seattle's Grand Hyatt Hotel on May 13-15, 2009.  UL's Bob Crane and Warren MacInnis represented UL. The Conference was attended by intellectual property professionals from around the world including rights holders, attorneys, private investigators and technology providers.

12th Annual Electrical Safety & Reliability Conference & Exhibition

On April 20, 2009, UL Anti-Counterfeiting Operations presented at the Professional Electrical Apparatus & Recyclers League (PEARL) conference in Atlanta, Georgia. Discussion focused on counterfeiting in the industrial electrical products market and how professionals in this industry can take steps to reduce their risk of procuring and distributing counterfeit and potentially unsafe devices and equipment. The presentation reached over 100 attendees and was conducted in partnership with representatives from Eaton-Cutler Hammer Corporation and Siemens Energy and Automation.

Protecting Intellectual Property Rights at the Border - CLE Seminar

Protecting a client's trademarks and copyrights is critical, but it can be difficult, particularly when infringing goods are coming from all directions. This CBA program provided in-depth information concerning the complex issues that arise in connection with civil and criminal enforcement of intellectual property rights. 

UL's Judith Lykins took part in the program panel, which included representatives from US Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and The John Marshall Law School.  Judith discussed intellectual property enforcement from a private sector perspective.

The audience of 40+ attendees heard about current IPR enforcement rules, regulations, policies, and practices. The panelists also discussed the protections available for imported and exported goods, prohibitions involving counterfeit goods, and recent changes and developments in the law.

On April 13th, 2009, at the request of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Anti-Counterfeiting Operations conducted a presentation for 20 delegates from various Eurasian countries as part of the Special American Business Internship Training (SABIT) program.  The presentation covered counterfeiting in the consumer products market, UL's enforcement programs, and UL's use of security holograms.  This was the second time that UL participated in the program.

UL's Bob Crane conducted training in conjunction with the International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition Conference for an audience of approximately 35 law enforcement personnel. A local Miami judge visited to voice support and praise the work of the intellectual property rights holders and law enforcement personnel engaged in the fight against counterfeit products in the Miami Dade county area.

Approximately 40 Customs personnel from both the airport and seaport US Customs and Border Protection locations were in attendance to see UL's Bob Crane present and to participate in hands-on evaluation of counterfeited samples. UL would like to offer a special thanks to all the Miami CBP personnel for your diligence in inspecting and interdicting counterfeit UL Marked goods.

UL's Bob Crane provided two sessions of anti-counterfeiting training to personnel at Houston US Customs and Border Protection.  The 40+ attendees included personnel from the Houston Airport, Houston Seaport, Houston Laboratory and Immigration and Customs Enforcement division. UL would like to express our thanks to Houston CBP personnel for their support and continued focus on public health and safety and for giving UL the opportunity to provide training.

Certification Industry Against Counterfeiting

UL's Brian Monks and Warren MacInnis attended the fourth meeting of the Certification Industry Against Counterfeiting (CIAC).  A total of nine certification organizations were represented, along with personnel from INTERPOL, EUROPOL, the FBI and the European Commission.  The CIAC is an international network of certification organizations committed to stopping the worldwide proliferation of products bearing counterfeit certification marks that may endanger public health and safety.
