Continued compliance
UL's RoHS continued compliance service provides product and management systems surveillance programs that are tailored for our customer's needs.
Product certification for RoHS compliance
This program requires initial testing of all representative samples down to the homogeneous material level for six restricted substances. The program participants set the limits below which they undertake to maintain the levels of the six restricted substances. These limits must be below the UL RoHS program limits in parts-per-million (ppm):
| Restricted substance | ppm |
| Cadmium (Cd) | 100 |
| Hexavalent chromium (Cr+6) | 1000 |
| Lead (Pb) | 1000 |
| Mercury (Hg) | 1000 |
| Polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) | 1000 |
| Polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) | 1000 |
Surveillance
The program operates a bi-yearly surveillance process consisting of:
- A quality management system audit.
- A product review.
- Collection of sample materials for testing. The program tests samples of customer's product to the homogeneous substance level for all restricted substances in no more than a two-year cycle.
iQ for restricted substances database
Those products that have been found to meet the requirements of the program are included in iQ for restricted substances, a database that is open to anyone who chooses to create an account.
The Mark
Program participants may use the UL RoHS product certification Mark for products that are included in iQ for restricted substances. The Mark may appear:
- On the product
- On the packaging of the product
- On the program participant's web site and in print literature when clearly associated with the products included in iQ for restricted substances database.
Withdrawal of use
Products are removed from iQ for restricted substances and are no longer eligible to bear the product certification Mark if a program participant voluntarily withdraws from the program or a non-compliance with UL's RoHS program requirements occurs, including:
- A product is found to have exceeded the UL RoHS program limit for any of the six restricted substances
- An alternate construction that has not been evaluated by UL RoHS program is found
- A program participant does not conform to the program's terms and conditions or surveillance requirements
Product certification surveillance
- Control process to assist in determining whether compliant materials/components have been substituted with non-tested materials or components
- Review bill of materials
- Frequency of visits can be based on needs or accreditation requirements
- May select sample products for testing
Management systems surveillance
- Control process to assist in determining whether the process has changed
- Frequency of visits can be based on needs or accreditation requirements
Customized surveillance
- Supply chain management
