UL's data-transmission performance-category marking program covers UL Listed communications cable. This program identifies five categories of performance for 100-ohm cable. The following is a summary of the numbers of conductor pairs and maximum operating frequencies covered by each of UL's performance categories.

- Patch cable employs stranded conductors only. It is intended for use in short lengths, such as from a workstation to an outlet.
