Verified cabling products
UL's complete verification programs cover safety, performance, quality assurance, unannounced factory follow-up inspection and follow-up testing at UL. UL verification helps users, specifiers, distributors and manufacturers identify cabling products that meet nationally recognized safety requirements as well as industry specifications for performance and quality.
Cabling products are verified by UL to various industry standards such as TIA/EIA 568B2, ISO/IEC 11801, Bellcore GR409-CORE and GR20-CORE. All of these programs include UL's quality system assessment and factory Follow-Up Services programs.
Product manufacturers covered under any of these performance testing programs must establish and maintain a quality program that follows the quality assurance guidelines of recognized quality standards, such as ISO 9002 of the International Organization for Standardization ISO 9000 Series. UL is the leading ISO 9000 registrar headquartered in the United States and conducts quality assessments of manufacturers' facilities to help them meet these requirements.

Product marking
Clients participating in UL's performance certification programs are required to provide specific markings on UL verified products and on a tag attached to the cable reels, coils or smallest unit container.
Surface printing
Certain information must be printed on the surface of most UL verified cabling products:
- On UL Listed and verified copper communications cable, the following must be printed: the manufacturer's name, trademark or UL file number (E-xxxx), the cable type (CM, CMR, CMP, etc.), the size and number of conductors in the cable, cable temperature rating, the letters "UL" (either in parentheses or in a circle), and a reference to the specific UL verification service. Examples of this reference are "Verified (UL) Category (2, 3, 4, 5, 5E or 6)," "Verified (UL) Category (3, 4, 5, 5E or 6) Patch Cable," or "Also verified (UL) Category (3, 4, or 5) ISO/IEC 11801."
- On optical fiber cable, the following should be printed: the manufacturers' name, trademark or UL file number (E-xxxx), the cable type (OFN, OFNR, OFNP, etc.), the letters UL (either in parentheses or in a circle), and a reference to the specific UL verification service. An example of this reference is "Also verified (UL) in accordance with Bellcore GR409-CORE."
- Listed handheld field testers evaluated for safety to the Standard for Safety of Electrical Measuring and Test Equipment; Part 1; General Requirements, UL 3111-1, may also be verified for Category 5 Performance Testing in accordance with Level I, II or III of Annexes A and B of TIA/EIA Specification 568B2 and 568B.2-1. The verification marking for these testers consists of the Listing Mark and the following statement: "Also verified Level (I, II or III) 568B.2 and 568B.2-1."
Tag marking
Tag markings are required on all cable. These markings should include all of the surface printing indicated above. In addition, tags must bear a "UL verification Label," which clients can acquire through a UL label center. This Label includes the UL symbol, the word "Listed," the product category (e.g., "communications cable"), a reference to the specific UL verification service, footage, and a UL issue number.
