UL's comprehensive factory inspection and certification program to determine compliance with NFPA 1901, Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus, 2009 Edition includes:

  • Fire pumps* (for all pumps greater than 750 gpm (3000 L/min))
  • Fire pumps** (for all pumps less than 250 gpm (1000 L/min))
  • Aerial devices * (aerial ladders, elevating platforms and water towers)
  • Line voltage electrical systems * (fixed generators including hydraulic generators)
  • Air systems* (type testing of a standard production model to validate design)
  • Low voltage electrical systems and warning devices **
  • Auxiliary pumps and associated equipment **
  • Water tanks **
  • Foam proportioning system accuracy**
  • Compressed air foam systems (CAFS)**
  • Breathing air quality (in accordance with NFPA 1989)**
  • UL offers total vehicle assessment to all manufacturers
    • Manufacturers are required to issue a certificate to the fire department that the vehicle fully complies with the entire Standard or
    • A statement of exception(s) to indicate what items on the vehicle are not in compliance with NFPA 1901.
    • UL offers this service to apparatus manufacturers as an unbiased third party testing organization.

* NFPA requires a Third Party Testing Organization (UL) to witness and certify the test results

** Manufacturers are required to certify the test results -- it is suggested by NFPA that the fire department may elect to have these items third-party certified. UL offers these inspection services.
