Standards update

Transition of legacy Audio/Video Equipment standards to new standards (ANSI/UL 60065 Seventh Edition and CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60065-2003 + Amendment 1:2006)

Many of the existing standards are being withdrawn (phased out) in favor of ANSI/UL 60065 Seventh Edition and CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60065-2003, the U.S. and Canadian standards for Audio, Video and Similar Electronic Apparatus. ANSI/UL 60065 is an IEC based standard which makes it desirable as a basis for safety certification for the global market.

Following the publication of ANSI/UL 60065 Seventh Edition and CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60065-2003, UL established a date of January 1, 2010 at which time many existing audio/video Standards were to be withdrawn. In addition, it was anticipated that the product certification(s) associated with the existing standards would be withdrawn unless the product was re-evaluated to ANSI/UL 60065 Seventh Edition and/or CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60065-2003 + Amendment 1:2006 prior to this date.

Revised withdrawal dates for existing standards

As shown below, the existing UL and CSA Audio/Video Standards are being withdrawn in favor of UL 60065 Seventh Edition and CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60065-2003 + Amendment 1:2006, the U.S. and Canadian standards for Audio, Video and Similar electronic Apparatus.

Transition timeline

Possible actions at this time:

  1. New UL and C-UL product certifications will be required to be based upon ANSI/UL 60065 Seventh Edition and CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60065-2003 + Amendment 1:2006 effective immediately, unless a request in writing is provided for evaluation using one of the existing standards. Written requests will not be accepted after April 1, 2012.
  2. Existing UL and C-UL certifications and submissions of alternate constructions and revisions to existing certifications using the existing standards may continue until May 1, 2012.
  3. Effective May 1, 2012, UL and C-UL product certifications will be required to be based upon ANSI/UL 60065 Seventh Edition and CAN/CSA C22.2 No. 60065-2003 + Amendment 1:2006. Any certification based upon existing audio/video standard(s) where there is a desire to continue certification beyond May 1, 2012 will need to be re-certified using these standards before this date.

For reference, the following Standards are active and audio/video product submissions using these Standards continue to be accepted beyond May 1, 2012. This Table also includes reference to associated audio/video component UL Standards.
