UL 60065 - SEVENTH EDITION

(Sub) CLAUSE / ANNEX NUMBER:

Clause 16

(Sub) CLAUSE / ANNEX HEADING:

External Flexible Cords

OTHER RELEVANT (Sub) CLAUSES / ANNEXES (as applicable):

Table 17A

DESCRIPTION OF ISSUE:

Many manufacturers of audio/video equipment ship their product directly to a distributor which in turn prepares the product for U.S., Canada or other International destinations. Detachable power supply cord product constructions facilitate this practice. Since the final destination of the product may be unknown, a detachable power supply cord may not be shipped with the equipment by the original equipment manufacturer.

Under what circumstances can a manufacturer of audio/video equipment ship the product without a detachable power supply cord?

APPLICATION GUIDELINE:

The manufacturer may ship the appliance intended for use with a detachable power supply cord without the detachable power supply cord provided that the input current rating of the apparatus does not exceed 10 amperes. If the molded-on appliance connector at the end of the power supply cord is an IEC 60320-1 type, the detachable power supply cord may be controlled as "optional" if adequate instructions on the selection of the proper North American power cord are included in the User Manual. The User Manual shall address the following concerns:

- The use of a Listed power cord that is surface marked "VW-1" having a cord type and length according to Table 17A.

- The attachment plug shall have the required ANSI/NEMA configuration (e.g., 1-15P) and polarization (when required) according to Clause 15.

The UL Report will include statements to address each of the above items.

RATIONALE:

Listed detachable power supply cords with 1-15P or 5-15P attachment plugs are readily available through local retailers and it is assumed that the user will be able to make the proper cord selection when referring to the User Manual provided with the apparatus. Use of the IEC 60320-1 appliance inlet on the apparatus will assure compatibility of commonly available power supply cords without the need to force fit a non-standard power supply cord connector.
