Stability's the key for AV equipment on racks, carts

NOTE: This information is from a previously printed press release, newsletter, or other dated document. It is presented here for archival purposes only.

The use of audio/video equipment such as power amplifiers, speakers, plasma screens, TV projectors, big screen TVs and the like in homes and commercial institutions is increasing as the public demands more electronic entertainment and information source options. Most of these new pieces of equipment, or complete systems, are very heavy. Proper installation and mounting are important for these products.

UL evaluates audio/video equipment intended to be installed on walls or ceilings with the proper hardware. This equipment must be mounted in accordance with the installation instructions supplied with the product. Use of mounting brackets or screws other than those specified in the installation instructions may introduce a hazard.

In addition, carts or wall brackets should only be used with the TV or audio/video equipment referenced in the installation manual, or as marked on the cart or wall bracket.

In commercial institutions where TVs are being used on tall carts, AHJs should be aware that UL Listing of the tall cart may require the use of accessories such as securement straps or the like, to hold the TV in place.

Carts intended for use with audio, video or television products in schools, hospitals and other institutional settings that have a shelf more than one meter (39.37inches) above the floor are investigated to UL 1667, Tall Institutional Carts for use with Audio, Video and Television-Type Equipment. These products can be found in the category Carts, Tall Institutional (CZWK) in UL's Electrical Utilization Equipment Directory (orange book).
