How to get started

UL encourages manufacturers to involve our testing certification staff as early as the product development stage.

We recommend that manufacturers start with a preliminary investigation to determine the status of compliance to the appropriate requirements.  This approach helps avoid major modifications - such as change in materials or design that delay the product's time to market.

During the preliminary investigation, we evaluate whether the construction, design and materials comply with the relevant standard. The deliverable of the preliminary investigation is a detailed report, identifying the non-compliant materials and design based upon the requirements. This service provides the manufacturer with the opportunity to rectify any non-compliant issues prior to the formal certification submittal.

As part of the preliminary investigation we can also provide:

  • Gap analysis
  • Material suitability
  • Design review for certification

After the preliminary investigation has been conducted, manufacturers have a better idea what is needed to prepare for the formal certification.
