Tests conducted

Tests are conducted in accordance with a variety of standards based on their applicability to the product being investigated. These standards include NFPA 50A, the standard for gaseous hydrogen systems at consumer sites; NFPA 54, the fuel gas code; the national electrical code articles 500, 501 and 692; and numerous product specific UL Standards. Some of the tests specified include the following:

  • Electrical input
  • Hydrogen output
  • Temperature
  • Normal operation
  • Endurance
  • Dielectric withstand
  • Grounding and continuity
  • Deformation
  • External leakage
  • Seat leakage
  • Hydrostatic strength
  • Abnormal operation
  • Rain exposure
  • Corrosion resistance
  • Stress corrosion
  • Low temperature performance
  • Fluid compatibility
  • Aging
  • Hazardous area evaluation

Other tests as necessary may be conducted to deal with special situations such as the evaluation to show that abnormal leakage is handled appropriately, gas component sections of the product are ventilated as designed, or non-certified components are tested appropriately for use in this application. Some additional testing may be needed to demonstrate that mitigating means noted in the FMEA operate as intended.
