  • What are the benefits to manufacturers?

The UL-EU Mark aids customers in reducing critical time-to-market and compliance costs by combining global testing and certification efforts.  Global manufacturers need only one product submittal and need to work with only one team of UL testing experts to gain the CE Certificate of Conformity and the UL-EU Mark.  Trust in a manufacturer's safety claim is key, and going the extra step to earn a voluntary safety mark to accompany the CE marking is evidence of a manufacturer's commitment to safety.

  • What are the benefits to users, retailers, specifiers, building officials, fire brigades, and insurers?

The UL-EU Mark provides evidence of an independent, third-party evaluation that authorities can look to for greater confidence that products meet European requirements. Specifically, the UL-EU Mark provides:

    • Independent, 3rd party testing to fire, electrical and shock requirements where self-declaration of compliance is the norm, providing added confidence in product safety
    • UL’s unique inspection approach that combines inspection of product construction with inspection of processes, providing added confidence that products continue to be manufactured as they were during test
    • UL’s frequent inspections at the manufacturer’s facilities globally, providing added confidence in compliance to requirements
    • Greater confidence in the safety of products supplied to the market
  • What is the certification process?

The certification process is simple and follows UL procedures:

    • Testing takes place at authorised UL Test Labs often local to the applicant.
    • Where applicable, components must be certified compliant with applicable EN standards (with supporting documentation).
    • Initial pre-license inspections and on-going follow-up factory inspections are conducted
  • Can the UL Global mark, the UL-EU Mark and CE marking investigation be combined?

Yes, the UL Global mark, the UL-EU Mark and CE marking investigations may be combined to one single investigation resulting in a UL Listing, a UL-EU Mark and an EC Certificate of Conformity that authorizes use of the marks on eligible products.

  • Does the UL Global Mark or the UL-EU Mark replace the CE Marking?

The UL Marks do not replace the normally mandatory CE (Conformité Européenne) Marking; however, data from the UL-EU test program can be used to support CE Marking declarations.

  • What about the factory inspections; do we need more visits?

The factory inspections for the UL Global Mark, the UL-EU Mark and the CE Mark may be combined thus saving on the need for additional visits to the manufacturing site(s). This will save time and costs for the manufacturer and enables the manufacturer to deal with a single certification body for their North American and European certification needs.

  • How long is the UL-EU Mark valid?

Certification is valid for 10 years so long as the product remains unchanged.
