Combustible materials for use in air-handling spaces (plenums)

Equipment installed in air-handling spaces, or plenums, must meet installation code requirements for smoke and flammability performance. With more than 100 years of fire testing and certification expertise, UL is a leading resource on fire safety, including tests to meet the requirements for materials installed in plenums.

Test Standard

  • UL 2043, Fire Test for Heat and Visible Smoke Release for Discrete Products and Their Accessories Installed in Air-Handling Spaces

UL developed the Standard for combustible materials for use in plenums, and is the leader in testing materials to UL 2043 requirements.

The UL advantage

Because equipment installed in plenums must meet specific requirements, it is beneficial for manufacturers to test for compliance with UL 2043 as part of a full package of testing and certification services. UL Listed products will appear in the UL product directory, which is referenced by more than 2,500 authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) and code officials annually.

Additionally, UL's Follow-Up Services program verifies ongoing compliance through periodic, unannounced inspections at the manufacturer's facility. Through this program, manufacturers, installers and AHJs can be confident that ongoing production consistently meets UL compliance requirements.
