Integrated services

Following are a few examples of how UL can integrate services.

Energy verification services (EVS)

In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in regulation to force efficiency improvements of motors and many motor-operated appliances. Motors use 65% (according to the U.S. department of energy) of the electricity in the United States alone. Certainly, improving the efficiency of motors will have a major impact.

UL's energy verification service (EVS) provides verification of product compliance with minimum energy efficiency requirements. Product evaluation is completed in accordance with the applicable U.S. or Canadian standards.

Hazardous location motors

UL can also investigate motors for use in hazardous locations.

Like many areas at UL, the hazardous locations group has been involved in evaluating motors and generators to the European requirements. They have even produced a poster explaining the European rating system compared to the U.S. system.

These products are covered in the motors for use in hazardous locations (category PTDR) and generators for use in hazardous locations (category PSPT). UL 674, the Standard for Safety of Electric Motors and Generators for Use in Division 1 Hazardous Locations is used for these investigations.

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)

UL can provide an internationally recognized certificate of compliance demonstrating a product meets minimum EMC specifications.

Our engineers can perform radiated and conducted emissions tests on a motor. We can also conduct susceptibility evaluations, which are becoming more and more important as motors incorporate electronics in the motor frame.
