List of Product Types and Exclusions

The below products are currently part of the UL Advantage Program (Small Appliance Category):

Electric Irons

Household IEC Class 0 and Class I electric irons rated 120 V, max 1800 W, 50/60 Hz of the following types:

Dry Iron with Type Y attached supply cord without the following:  Vented Steam Iron with Type Y attached supply cord without the following:
  • Electronic protective controls
  • Separable stands
  • PTC heating elements
  • Cord Reels
 
  • Separate water tank,
  • Electronic protective controls,
  • Separable stand,
  • PTC heating element
  • Cord reels

 

These are the requirements of UL 60335-1 and UL 60335-2-3, and CAN/CSA-E60335-1/4E:2003 & CAN/CSA-E60335-2-3:2006.

Note – The Program does not apply to:

  1. IEC Class II (double insulated) irons of any type
  2. Pressurized Steam Irons
  3. Instantaneous steam irons
  4. Cordless irons
  5. Travel irons
  6. Irons with other than Type Y supply cords

Air Filtering Appliances

Household portable, residential floor-supported air filtering appliances provided with mechanical filtration media and polymeric enclosures with no accessible metal parts.

These are the requirements of UL507 / CSA C22.2 No. 113.

Note – The Program does not cover air filtering appliances intended for outdoor use or provided with:

  1. Oscillating function
  2. Electronic interlock
  3. Motor employing a cycling type thermal protector
  4. Ionization circui
  5. UV lamps

Ceiling Suspended Fans

Dry or damp location ceiling suspended fans weighing 70 pounds or less intended for connection to a branch circuit rated 120 V or less, provided with a: The Program does not cover ceiling suspended fan with:
    1. ball joint type hanging system,
    2. paddle blades (standard wood or 3-D molded polymeric straight construction),
    3. an impedance protected or electronically protected motor and
    4. a switch compartment located beneath the motor or between the motor and light kit (incandescent or fluorescent only, where provided).
    These are the requirements of UL507 / CSA C22.2 No. 113.
       
      1. Blades of unusual design, such as sailcloth, fishing pole, metal, glass, etc.
      2. Quick-connect hanging systems
      3. Shapes, decals, or other types of decorative parts that resemble cartoon characters, animals, or shapes that are commonly associated with children's play.

       

       

      Household Food Mixers

      Household electric food mixers rated 120 V.

      These are the requirements of UL 982 and CSA-C22.2 No. 1335.1 & C22.2 No. 1335.2.14.

      Note – The Program does not apply to:

      1. Blending mixers
      2. Ice cream mixers
      3. Wand-type mixers
      4. Liquid (drink) mixers
      5. Cabinet- or wall-mounted food mixers
      6. Food mixers intended for both household and commercial use
      7. Food mixers with means for connection of functional attachments for performing functions other than mixing
      8. Outdoor use food mixers

       

      Hair Clipping and Shaving Appliances

      Cordless, cord/cordless or corded-only hair clipping and shaving appliances that use a Class 2 direct plug-in power unit or charging unit, and rechargeable hair clipping and shaving appliances that use a charger base with an external Class 2 direct plug-in charging unit.

      These are the requirements of UL 1028 and CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 68.

      Note – The Program does not apply to:

      1. Rechargeable appliances that use user-replaceable batteries or a detachable battery pack
      2. Wall-hung appliances (A wall-hung appliance is a cord-connected appliance that is supplied with keyhole slots, notches, hanger holes, or similar features for hanging on a wall)

      120 Volt Hair Clipping and Shaving Appliances Corded-only hair clipping and shaving appliances, including hair trimmers, for household or commercial use on persons or animals that are nominally rated 120 volts.

      These requirements are those of UL 1028 and CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 68.

      Note – The Program does not apply to:

      1. Manicure, pedicure, or personal grooming appliances used for similar purposes
      2. Animal shearers
      3. Appliances using magnesium-base alloy enclosures
      4. Appliances using a swivel-cord assembly
      5. Double-insulated appliances
      6. Wall-hung appliances (A wall-hung appliance is a cord-connected appliance that is supplied with keyhole slots, notches, hanger holes, or similar features for hanging on a wall)

       

      Hair Straighteners

      Household hand supported hair straighteners, rated 120 V, 125 V, 120/240 V or 125/250 V, with PTC heating element enclosed within a polymeric / metal enclosure. The hair straighteners may be provided with swivel connection to power supply cord.

      These are the requirements of UL859 and CSA C22.2 No. 36.

      Note – The Program does not apply to:

      1. Hair Straighteners with ionizer
      2. Hair Straighteners with steam function
      3. Hair Straighteners with means for connection of other functional attachments such as hair drying or hair curling or
      4. Hair Straighteners with grounding or double insulation

      Electric Fans

      Portable, residential stand and desk fans rated 120 V with polymeric enclosures and no accessible metal parts.

      These are the requirements of UL507 / CSA C22.2 No. 113.

      Note – The Program does not apply to:

      1. Reversible fans
      2. Fans provided with an automatic oscillating function
      3. Fans provided with a means of side to side head adjustment
      4. Fans with motors employing a cycling type thermal protector
      5. Those fans intended for use in a window or outdoors
      6. Desk fans with blade diameters greater than 16 inches o
      7. Stand fans measuring more than 4 feet at any adjustment

       

      Slow Cookers

      Household, portable electric slow cookers rated 120 V with a resistance wire /mica band-type heating element enclosed within a polymeric / metal enclosure, and a removable ceramic bowl.

      These are the requirements of UL1026 and CSA C22.2 No. 1335.1 and 1335.2.15.

      Note – The Program does not apply to:

      1. Slow cookers with integral cooking vessels
      2. Slow cookers intended for both household and commercial use
      3. Slow cookers with means for connection of functional attachments for performing functions other than as a slow cooker, or
      4. Intended for outdoor use

      Immersion Deep Fryers

      Household, portable electric deep fryers, rated 120 V with an immersion sheath heating element that is controlled by an adjustable capillary bulb type thermostat, a power switch, pilot lights, and interlock all enclosed within a polymeric enclosure and a removable oil vessel. All products are provided with a detachable power supply cord set employing a magnetic appliance coupler.     

      These are the requirements of UL1083/ CSA C22.2 No. 64.

      Note – The Program does not apply to:

      1. Immersion deep fryers with integral cooking vessels, such as provided with conventional or cool wall deep fryers 
      2. Immersion deep fryers  intended to cook an individual food item weighing 4 lbs. (1.81 kg) or more in the frozen as-received condition
      3. Immersion deep fryers intended for both household and commercial use,
      4. Immersion deep fryers with means for connection of functional attachments for performing functions other than as a deep fryer, or
      5. Intended for outdoor use

       

      Griddles, Immersible Griddles, Skillets, Immersible Skillets

      Portable household electric griddles, immersible griddles, skillets and immersible skillets, rated 120 V with an adjustable temperature probe, polymeric materials and a sheath heating element. Products evaluated for C-UL shall be grounded.   

      These are the requirements of UL 1083/CSA C22.2 No.64

      Note – The Program does not apply to:

      1. Griddles, immersible griddles, skillets  and immersible skillets intended for both household and commercial use
      2. Griddles, immersible griddles, skillets  and immersible skillets with means for connection of functional attachments for performing functions other than as a griddle or skillet, or
      3. Intended for outdoor use

      NOTE: For all of the product types noted above, the UL Advantage Program does not cover appliance shapes, decals, or other types of decorative parts that resemble cartoon characters, animals, or shapes that are commonly associated with children's play.
