Lighting FAQ

  • Where can a manufacturer obtain a copy of the UL requirements?

UL requirements can be ordered through Comm2000 by phone at 888-853-3503 or by fax at 888-853-3512. A three year subscription will provide information regarding proposed changes to the Standard, an opportunity to comment on the proposed changes to the Standard, and new or revised pages for the Standard.

  • How are Listed and Recognized components identified?

The UL Mark on the actual product is the component manufacturer's declaration that the component is built in accordance with the UL requirements.

Listed companies for ballasts, conduit, conduit fittings, lampholders, wire and many other Listed products are identified in the "Electrical Construction Materials Directory." Recognized components are identified in the "Recognized Component Directory." Recognized component plastics are identified in the "Plastics Recognized Component Directory." The product directories also contain important information about the intended use of the product.

  • Where can a manufacturer obtain product directories?

The directories are available for purchase from the UL Listing Information Services Department. Call 847-272-8800, extension 42899 for ordering information. They are also available online.

  • How are the Listing Marks controlled?

The inspection center retains the Listing Marks until the manufacturer can demonstrate that only products that are eligible to bear the Listing Mark are labeled. The local UL field representative will deliver the Listing Marks as needed.

  • What are Follow-Up Services?

A local UL field representative will visit a manufacturer at least four times per year to verify that the Listing Mark is only applied to products that are being built in accordance with the UL requirements. Additional visits may be required depending upon the volume produced under Type L service. For more information on Follow-Up Services visit our Follow-Up Services FAQ.

  • When should the services agreement be returned?

The services agreement needs to be signed, dated and returned with the payment and the request for payment of preliminary deposit form. Authorization to use the UL Mark cannot be given until the services agreement is completed and returned.
