Specific guidelines and rules

A clear explanation of UL product certification will help customers and others understand the meaning of "UL Listed," "UL Classified," "UL Performance Verified" or "UL Recognized Component."

UL Listing

UL Listing means that UL has tested representative samples of the product and determined that it meets UL's requirements. These requirements are based primarily on UL's published and nationally recognized Standards for Safety.

References to UL and the UL Listing may include:

  • the UL Listing Mark
  • the UL Listing Mark for Canada (if applicable)
  • the combined Canada/U.S. Listing Mark (if applicable)

For packaging, the UL logo may be used alone as long as the product (as opposed to any Listed component in or connected to the product) bears the complete UL Listing Mark.

Incorrect references

"UL Listed" or "UL Listed to Canadian safety standards."

"UL Approved" or "UL Approved for Canada."

"Listed by UL."

"UL Certified."

"This product is Listed to applicable UL Standards and requirements by UL."

"This product has earned the UL Listing Mark."

"This product is Listed by UL. Representative samples of this product have been evaluated by UL and meet applicable safety standards."

"UL Listing pending."

Whatever standards  products are Listed to by UL, no claims should be made that imply that your company itself is in any way "Listed," "Approved," or "Certified" by UL.

UL Classification

UL Classification means that UL has tested and evaluated samples of your product with respect to certain properties of the product. UL classifies products to:

  • Applicable UL requirements
  • Standards for safety
  • Standards of other national and international organizations

It is important to use the UL Classification Mark only accompanied by a statement indicating the specific scope of the Classification and a control number. Your UL Classification may include the:

  • UL Classification Mark
  • UL Classification Mark for Canada
  • Combined Canada/U.S. UL Classification Mark (if applicable)

For packaging, the UL logo may be used alone as long as the product bears the complete UL Classification Mark.

UL Performance Verification

UL Performance Verification means that UL has tested and evaluated samples of your product, typically against a specific performance standard. UL Performance Verifies products to:

  • National or international industry performance standards
  • Manufacturer's proprietary (internal) standards
  • UL requirements, such as the UL XTR Structured Cabling Program

It is important to use the UL Performance Verification Mark only in conjunction with a statement indicating the specific scope of the Performance Verification and a control number. Your UL Performance Verification includes the UL Performance Verification Mark. Your UL Follow-Up Services procedures or UL guide information will specify whether the Performance Verification Mark should be applied as a package or as a product marking.

UL Component Recognition

UL's component recognition service covers the evaluation of components or materials intended for use in a complete product or system. These components are intended only for incorporation into other end-use products that may be eligible for UL's Listing, Classification or Certificate Service.

Because UL Recognized Components are intended for specific applications, the symbol consisting of a UL in a circle can never be used in connection with the advertising or promotion of your products that are UL Recognized Components. The appropriate symbol for promoting a UL Component Recognition is the UL Recognized Component Mark.

UL Functional Safety Listing Mark

The Functional Safety Listing Mark means that UL has evaluated representative samples of a product and determined that they meet UL's requirements as well as the safety requirements of a published functional safety standard. Functional safety is that part of overall safety which depends on the correct functioning of safety related control systems and software. A functional safety investigation involves the evaluation of a safety critical circuit(s) in accordance with declared safety ratings relating to software, hardware, environmental stress factors (such as EMC) and safety lifecycle management processes.

The required marking elements also include the aforementioned safety level declared by the product manufacturer. Functional safety standards call this safety level a Safety Integrity Level (SIL), Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL), Performance Level (PL) or Class. In conjunction with the Functional Safety Listing Mark, a manufacturer identifies the functional safety standard and the SIL, ASIL, PL or Class to which the product has been evaluated. References to UL and the UL Listing may include:

  • UL Functional Safety Listing Mark
  • UL Functional Safety Listing Mark for Canada, Europe, or combinations of U.S., Canada and/or Europe as applicable

For packaging, the UL Functional Safety Listing Mark may be used alone as long as the product (as opposed to any component in or connected to the product) bears the complete UL Functional Safety Listing Mark.
