Overview of the information technology equipment (ITE) Process

Initial contact - key things to consider

  • It is best to begin the process early in the design phase. UL can help build safety into the design of a product and create a certification strategy.
  • Understand the type of product and its typical use environment prior to submittal. This will determine the scope of testing and certification that will be required.
  • Clearly distinguish between a new product and an alternate construction product already Listed by UL. This will help to determine an accurate timeframe for project completion.
  • Identify the target markets for this product. UL provides safety certification and other services for markets globally and can bundle services together into one integrated service package.

Contact our Customer Service Professionals

Initial review by engineer

After receiving and accepting the quote and providing the initial deposit, an engineer will contact you within 48 hours to discuss the project and any additional samples and other information required.

Provide product data and samples

Upon receipt of the product data and samples, UL will begin the evaluation and testing phase of the product. There may be special sample and information needs depending on the type of product which will be specified in the initial quote.

Testing and evaluation

During this phase, our engineering staff will actively evaluate and test the product to the appropriate safety standards based on the product type and targeted markets.

Test reports and certificates issued

UL will provide the evaluation documentation of the product along with test results, and as appropriate, the formal attestation by UL of the compliance of the product in the form of certifications such as authorization to use the UL Mark.

Follow-up inspections

Follow-up inspections help to establish confidence that future production of the product beyond that which was initially evaluated continues to comply with the appropriate safety standards. This typically includes quarterly visits to your manufacturing facilities by UL field services staff to sample products currently in production and compare them with the description of the product that was prepared during the testing and evaluation phase. The Follow-Up Service is established when the Listing is issued for the product, and UL will automatically contact you regarding this process.
