Important dates marking changes

Update: December 3, 2007

In August 2007, UL announced the launch of the Security and Signaling Marks and simplified Listing Mark texts.

The August 2007 communication identified two key dates:

  • December 31, 2007 -- the last day in which the old style labels could be ordered or printed. (updated: now December 31, 2008)
  • December 31, 2008 -- the last day in which the old style labels could be applied to products. After this date all products are to bear the new Security and Signaling Marks.

Recognizing the amount of effort our clients need to undertake in the conversion to the additional Security and Signaling marks, UL has agreed to allow for the ordering and printing of the old style labels throughout 2008. However, all products must still be labeled with the new Marks and, where appropriate, the simplified product description text beginning on January 1, 2009.

Please note, there will be no refunds or credits given for any unused old-style labels. We encourage you to begin using the new style labels immediately, which should assist in planning for the transition. New Marks may be used immediately as long as the appropriate supplemental text is included as part of the product marketing. The requested supplemental text may be found in the marking requirements for the specific product category.

The UL Signaling and Security Marks are intended to provide users and stakeholders alike with greater confidence that fire alarm, security alarm and related equipment have not only been tested for safety, but also have been evaluated for reliability to perform their intended security and/or signaling function. Additionally, this will provide jurisdictional authorities further clarity regarding the meaning of UL Listing Marks on products.

UL will be reviewing and revising all manufacturers' files, at no cost, to include the Marks and applicable simplified text. Supplemental text that identifies the intended use of the product will be included in the manufacturer's file and will be required once the simplified text is used as part of the Listing Mark.
