Top 10 hot tub and spa safety tips

Hot tubs and spas can be a relaxing way to unwind at the end of the day. However, consumers need to keep in mind some important safety tips when maintaining and using their whirlpools and spas. UL, a global safety organization, offers the following safety precautions to ensure consumers provide a safe, healthy and enjoyable recreational experience for their family and friends.

  1. Always use a locked safety cover when the spa is not in use. Keep young children away from spas or hot tubs unless there is constant adult supervision.
  2. Make sure the spa has the dual drains and drain covers required by current safety standards.
  3. Have a professional regularly check your spa or hot tub to make sure it is in safe working condition. This includes ensuring that drain covers are in place and not cracked or missing. Check the drain covers yourself throughout the year.
  4. Make sure an emergency shut-off switch for the pool circulation pump and the spa jet pump is in an easily accessible place near the pool or spa. Bathers should know where it is, and how to use it in case of emergency.
  5. Never use the spa or hot tub if you are using alcohol or drugs. The combination of hot water and alcohol and/or drugs can cause dizziness, falling, unconsciousness or a heart attack.
  6. Keep the water temperature in your spa below 104°F (40°C). Age or health conditions (especially pregnancy) may require a lower temperature. Consult your physician for more information.
  7. Get out of the spa or hot tub immediately if you experience nausea, dizziness or fainting. These are signs of hyperthermia, which can be fatal. Cool your body with cold towels or a cool shower. Call a doctor or 9-1-1 if the symptoms do not go away.
  8. Never use an extension cord to connect a spa system to an existing electrical outlet. A spa system must operate from a GFCI-protected circuit or outlet. If in doubt, consult a licensed electrician
  9. Never alter the electrical cord or plug on the spa system.
  10. Make sure your spa or hot tub has dual suction outlets. All tub suction fittings should be certified to meet the current ASME/ANSI Standards that apply.
