New EMF Testing Requirements Effective January 2011

The evaluation of electronic and electrical equipment for Electromagnetic Fields (EMF) related to the human exposure under EN 62311:2008 became mandatory for cell phones, laptops, barcode hand terminals and other electronic and electrical products. Compliance will now be required for CE Marking, self-declaration and GS mark. Low Voltage Directive 2006/95/EC and R&TTE directive requires products to have protection against hazards that could occur within a product or from external influences, such as exposure to EMF.

In order to protect electronic and electrical device users from the potential symptoms linked to EMF, portable E&E equipment with radio power greater than 20mW and use within 20 centimeters of the human body must meet established EMF exposure limits that consider health and biological effects.

By sharing their EMF testing expertise with customers in Europe, Japan and the United States, UL is demonstrating its commitment to helping keep end users safe as human reliance on portable electronics continues to grow. To learn more about the new required EMF testing under EN 62311, please contact Asli Solmaz-Kaiser, Business Development Manager for Batteries and Power Supplies or Christian Salvans, Business Development Manager for UL WISE (Wireless - Interoperability - Security - EMC).
