Recognition and compliance verification
Since 1988, UL has offered manufacturers of food service equipment a certification program to demonstrate compliance with public health codes and standards. UL's certification capabilities also include electrical, fire, combustion, casualty, EMC and other products and services.
Equipment covered
The certification program covers all forms of food service equipment, including electrical, gas-fired and mechanical appliances, utensils, materials, and control/indicating devices.
Standards
UL Classifies products in accordance with ANSI/NSF International Standards 2-8, 12, 18, 20, 25, 26, 37, 51, 59, 169 and 184. UL will consider certifying products to other standards or developing outlines of investigation for new products for which standards do not currently exist.
UL Classifies meat and poultry plant equipment for sanitation in accordance with UL 2128 or to requirements of ANSI/NSF/3-A standards, as applicable.
Product investigations
Product investigations are performed by UL staff members and include a construction review, performance testing (as applicable), material analysis and preparation of a descriptive report.
Follow-Up Services
An integral part of UL's certification service is factory follow-up inspection. UL conducts a minimum of four announced inspections at each factory that produces equipment bearing UL Certification Marks.
Look for the UL EPH Mark
UL's EPH Mark for the food service equipment program is a Classification marking.
The complete EPH Mark for food service equipment consists of the EPH logo, the appropriate standard number (e.g., ANSI/NSF, Code of Federal Regulations, etc), a product identity and a control number. The EPH logo consists of a "UL in a circle," the word "Classified" in an arc above the circle, and "EPH" located below the circle, all enclosed in a triangle. The triangle is printed with white lettering on a green background.
The supplemental Food Service Mark is an optional Mark. A detailed description (.pdf file) of the UL Marks that may be used is also available.
The presence of the EPH Mark on the equipment and its listing in UL Online Certification Directory offers assurance of compliance with requirements of the Standard.
