Drinking water analytical services FAQ

  • Where are you located?

    UL's 70,000-square-foot facility dedicated to drinking water analysis is located at 110 S. Hill Street, South Bend, IN 46617.

  • How do I contact you?

    Our customer service representatives are available via our toll free number at +1-800-332-4345, Monday through Friday 8-5 PM EST. You may also email us.

  • Are you certified in my state?

    We maintain certification for drinking water compliance analysis in 50 states and Puerto Rico. To view our current certification in your state, visit our certifications page.

  • How do I collect my sample?

    A collection kit is shipped with every order free of charge. The collection kit includes a cooler, ice packs, all necessary bottles and preservatives as well as detailed collection instructions. Click here to view our collection instructions.

  • What are your collection and preservation requirements?

  • What types of analysis do you perform?

    UL specializes in trace-level analysis of drinking water and other clean matrices samples. We offer a wide range of services including microbiological, inorganics, metals, volatile organics, semi-volatile organics and radiologicals.   • What are your reporting limits?

  • Do you perform testing on wastewater, soils, etc?

    UL specializes in clean water matrices and we do not perform analysis on wastewater, soils, etc. Please email us or call 1.800.332.4345 for assistance in helping you find a laboratory that specializes in those analyses.

  • What are your hours of operation?

    UL's water laboratory is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST.

  • How do I ship my samples to you?

    Because samples collected for drinking water analysis are subject to strict holding time and temperature requirements, samples must be shipped the same day they are collected and shipped via overnight service using UPS, FedEx, DHL or Airborne.

  • When are you open to receive samples?

    UL's water laboratory will accept samples Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST. We also accept samples via UPS, FedEx, and DHL on Saturday mornings. When shipping samples for Saturday delivery, please email us or call toll free +1-800-332-4345 by 4 p.m. on the Friday before. You also must specify "Saturday AM Delivery" with your carrier to ensure your samples are received.

  • What is your turnaround time?

    Standard turnaround time is two to three weeks from date of sample receipt. Note that some samples may take longer to process based on analytical requirements. Please email us or call +1-800-332-4345 if you have any questions regarding our turnaround time.

  • Can my samples be expedited?

    Yes, expedited services are available for most projects at the following rates:

  • What steps do you take to ensure data quality?

    UL maintains internal quality assurance and quality control programs. Routine quality control includes the analysis of method blanks, trip blanks, field duplicates, matrix spikes, matrix spike duplicates, external quality control samples and participation in blind performance testing studies required for certification.
