Information Related to the Development of Safety Requirements for E85 Dispensers and Components

In October 2006 Underwriters Laboratories suspended authorization for manufacturers to use UL Markings (Listing or Recognition) on components for fuel dispensing devices that specifically reference compatibility with alcohol blended fuels that contain greater than 15% alcohol (i.e. ethanol, methanol and other alcohols). The authorization suspension was issued as studies on Ethanol indicate that—in high concentrations—it may have significantly enhanced degrading effects versus traditional gasoline. UL is currently updating their safety requirements to address any material compatibility issues for high alcohol concentrated fuels (greater than 15% alcohol blends). Below is background information and status updates related to these activities.
