Q & A Regarding UL Gas-Fired Mark

Gas-Fired Mark

Q. Why did UL develop a new Gas-Fired Mark?

A. The UL Mark is the most widely used, trusted and recognized safety certification mark in North America. The UL Mark is applied to over 16,500 types of products, including electrical, mechanical, fire resistive and combustion equipment. Over 18 billion UL marks were applied to products during the past year. The new UL Gas-Fired Mark is specially designed to assure customers, retailers and regulatory authorities that equipment displaying the Gas-Fired mark has been evaluated to nationally recognized gas equipment standards.

Q. What standards are used in evaluation of equipment labeled with the UL Gas-Fired Mark?

A. Equipment marked with the UL Gas-Fired Mark will be evaluated to the nationally recognized standard appropriate for the type of equipment. This includes the ANSI Z21/Z83 series of standards for most residential and commercial equipment and UL standards such as UL 795 for large industrial gas-fired equipment.

Q. How can I determine what standard was used by UL for certification of a gas-fired appliance?

A. All Listed products are categorized in our certification directories ("Heating, Cooling, Ventilating and Cooking Equipment" Directory and on-line at www.ul.com) under specific product categories. Every product category contains a "Guide Information Page" that specifies the standard used in the evaluation of the product. Additionally, for equipment Listed to ANSI Z21/83 standards, the product nameplate will include identification of the standard and most recent effective addenda used in the evaluation of the product.

Q. What version of the standard will UL use, and what happens when new revisions are published?

A. UL will always ensure that the most recent version of the standards are used. When new requirements are adopted, an effective date will be established and UL will conduct an industry review of all equipment to determine compliance with the newly established requirements.

Q. My equipment is currently UL Classifed to an ANSI standard. Will I be able to use the new UL Gas-Fired Mark?

A. During the next year, UL will review all currently Classified products to determine compliance with the most current version of the ANSI standard. Once compliance is determined, you will be authorized to use the new UL Gas-Fired Mark on your Listed gas-fired equipment.

Q. What will happen to my equipment that is currently Listed to an ANSI standard and shown in the "Miscellaneous Heating Appliances" (LVTT) Category?

A. In the past there have been a number of product types grouped together under a miscellaneous heating appliance category. UL will be reviewing all products in this category and will be establishing a number of new individual categories appropriate for the types of equipment Listed. Once established, your products will be transferred to the new category and you will be authorized to use the UL Gas-Fired Mark.

Q. What about my equipment currently Listed to UL standards?

A. Gas-Fired Equipment that is Listed within the scope of UL standards will be authorized to use the Gas-Fired Mark.

Q. Is there a mark available for gas-fired products Listed to Canadian Requirements?

A. As with other UL Marks, versions of the Gas-Fired Mark will be available for equipment certified to U.S. and/or Canadian standards.

Q. What is the time schedule for implementation of the Gas-Fired Mark?

A. During the next twelve months, UL plans to review all existing certifications on a category by category basis to ensure that the appropriate edition of the standard is specified. UL will then notify all clients of what steps they will need to take to change the UL certification mark to the new UL Gas-Fired Mark.

Q. What happens if I have to make changes to my product to comply with the most recent edition of the standard?

A. In each case, a reasonable effective date will be established for compliance with the current requirements. Generally, this effective date will range from twelve to eighteen months from the time the review is initiated. When compliance with the current requirements is confirmed, you will be authorized to use the new Gas-Fired Mark.

Q. Will I be required to use the new UL Gas-Fired mark on my gas-fired equipment?

A. Yes. To ensure consistency within the gas-fired appliance industry and reduce the likelihood of confusion by customers and regulatory agencies, all Listed gas-fired equipment will eventually be required to use the new Gas-Fired Mark.

Q. Who do I contact if I have any further Questions?

A. If you have any further questions, please contact your normal UL contact person, or contact:
