NFPA-SAFE Certified Auditors

Audit Services

NFPA logoThe National Food Processors Association's Supplier Audits for Food Excellence (NFPA-SAFE) Program was implemented in August 2001. Its goal is to promote uniformity of food industry audit standards and auditor practice.

UL staff participate as certified auditors in the NFPA-SAFE program. Those that have qualified to participate in the performance of NFPA-SAFE audits and assessments had to demonstrate a vast knowledge of food safety and of the food industry itself.

Additionally, each satisfied NFPA-SAFE program criteria for prior food industry, auditing and/or regulatory experience. Finally, each UL Certified Auditor completed NFPA training and examination requirements prior to their certification.

Additional Background

The National Food Processors Association (NFPA) is considered to be among the largest scientific trade associations to represent the food processing industry, and a leading authority on food science and safety for the food industry.

The NFPA-SAFE Program was developed as “a voluntary, independent, industry-designed program for conducting audits of suppliers (“Suppliers”) of food ingredients to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of food industry audits.” A NFPA committee composed of twenty-six member companies developed the requirements and SAFE program components. The committee addressed the food industry concerns for the number of audits being conducted, the quality of the audits and the quality of the auditors performing them. NFPA-SAFE offers an alternative to the complex and often duplicative audit environment of today.
