The Christmas Tree Fire

In the tradition of UL's safety mission, the Fire Safety Division is proud to introduce its newest fire safety video, "The Christmas Tree Fire."

The complete line of quality, yet affordable, videos is aimed at fire training and education. We hope that you enjoy watching our video and find it useful in your work. You may also recognize its potential for others within the fire community.

"The Christmas Tree Fire"

Each holiday season millions of trees and other greenery are purchased from lots and tree farms across the country. While a lavishly decorated tree is often the centerpiece of your holiday celebration, they are also involved in over 300 of the home fires that occur annually.

This video shows a simulated version of a fully furnished living room that is decorated for the holidays. A natural Christmas tree serves as the focal point of the room and becomes a contributing fuel source to a rapidly increasing fire. The room reaches flashover approximately 40 seconds after ignition.

Safety tips are presented to highlight potential fire hazards involving natural Christmas trees and other decorations. Some of the tips include:

  • Inspect last year's decorations.
  • Place candles on a flat, stable surface.
  • Practice an escape plan.

"The Residence Hall Fire"

Each year, more than 1,300 fires occur in residence halls and Greek housing. An untold number occur in off-campus housing such as rented apartments and houses. Whether you live in a residence hall, Greek housing or an off-campus apartment, you are now part of a larger community. And what you do may have a profound affect on those living with you.

This video shows a simulated version of a fully furnished room in a residence hall. The room is made up of items that are found in many rooms such as books, CDs, bed dressing, candles and clothes.

Through the use of real fire footage and personal testimonials, the video shows students the possible fire hazards that surround them every day. Safety tips are presented to remind them about fire prevention, detection and suppression and engage them to form an escape plan ahead of time.

Following the feature presentation, the fire is shown in its entirety from ignition through flashover. An outlet was overloaded with appliances and other electronics. It was ignited to imitate an electrical fire. The fire reaches flashover 7 minutes after ignition.

"Your Office Fire"

If you knew your job wasn't going to exist in a year's time, how would you feel? Imagine the reason is a fire in your office caused by carelessness.

"Your Office Fire" provides a vivid demonstration of the possible consequences of an office fire as well as the speed at which it can destroy an office. The video advises office workers on the simple precautions that they can take to avoid this disaster.

The fire is shown in real time reaching flashover about four and a half minutes after ignition. It involves materials that are typical of many offices. No special effects are used. By looking at why fires like this happen, it's possible to give advice on how you can prevent them.

"The Living Room Fire"

Few people realize the speed and ferocity of fire. In the time you might spend listening to the weather forecast, a fire could destroy your home or even your life.

This video shows a fully furnished living room with one wall missing to allow the camera to see inside. In addition to the furniture, the room is made up of items that are found in many homes such as videotapes, CDs, picture frames, candles and even children's toys.

A single match is dropped into a wastepaper basket sitting next to the couch. The fire develops in real time and a running caption describes the events taking place. The room reaches flashover at two minutes and thirty seconds after ignition.

Following the real-time fire, an edited version of the fire is shown to emphasize the rapid growth and development of the fire.

Finally, ten seconds of the fire are shown in slow motion to show the tremendous energy and power within the fire.
