UL's Global Field Services team performs various types of inspections and audits around the globe. The type of work performed by our highly qualified staff is broad and varies from UL's Follow-Up Service inspections to customized inspection services incorporating management system audits for our customers.

Follow-Up Services

What makes UL different from other certification service providers? UL's Follow-Up Services distinguishes UL from other certification service providers and is fundamental to the integrity of the UL Mark that appears on 21 billion products annually. For a product to bear a UL certification Mark, it must not only comply with the applicable requirements when initially evaluated, but also maintain compliance with safety requirements as it's being produced on an ongoing basis. The Global Field Services team has been charged with verifying that product manufacturers maintain adequate production controls to achieve this level of on-going compliance for products bearing the UL certification Mark.

How does UL maintain integrity behind the UL Mark? UL Follow-Up Services is a critical element in maintaining the integrity of the UL Mark. Not only does UL evaluate samples of products in its laboratories, UL will regularly visit locations where UL certified products are manufactured to verify through surveillance that manufacturers maintain adequate controls to continually comply with UL requirements. Throughout the lifetime of the UL certification, products undergo regular inspections at manufacturing facilities to verify continued compliance with requirements. To help achieve consistent and on-going compliance, manufacturers must be aware of the requirements in UL's Follow-Up Services Procedure and applicable standards as well as basic UL requirements for equipment calibration, proper application of the UL Mark and other topics.

How does UL partner with customers for a common objective? UL representatives function as auditors to assist manufacturers in their efforts to maintain adequate controls and achieve on-going compliance with UL Requirements. Manufacturers and UL have similar goals: to see that only those products fully complying with applicable safety requirements are produced and carry the UL Mark.

In addition to providing surveillance for the UL Mark and other Global Market Access Marks, Field Services offers various inspection services including:

  • Fire Equipment Services - This specialized team performs non-destructive testing (NDT) of fire engines, aerial and ground ladders, and other fire fighting equipment.
  • Field Evaluations - This specialized team provides solutions to achieve code-compliance with field-installed equipment.
  • Field Inspections - This team provides Follow-Up Services inspections on recently installed product that is missing the proper UL labels.
  • Lightning Protection Services - This specialized team issues inspection certificates for lightning protection systems by inspecting system components and checking completed field installations.
  • Commercial Inspection and Testing Services - This team provides special inspections and auditing services on a wide range of products to meet a customers needs.

Field Services also partners with our other operational groups to assist in providing services such as Management System Registration.
