IAQ Standard article written by Jack B. Hatlen, an Associate Professor at the Emeritrus University of Washington's Department of Environmental & Public Health.

UL embarked upon the development of an ANSI-accredited Indoor Air Quality Standard in 1996. To facilitate the successful completion of this consensus based Standards development intiative, UL formed a Technical Committee comprised of a balanced group of users, producers (industry representatives), regulatory authorities and others.

Developing an indoor air quality standard is a complex task. To narrow the initial focus of the Standard, the Technical Committee agreed to begin development of three subparts, a general subpart, an equipment subpart beginning with vacuum cleaners, and an air cleaning devices subpart.

The general subpart was intended to house common definitions, common testing requirements the risk assessment methods. For a list of participating groups click here.

The development of equipment subpart began with vacuum cleaners and intended to address the testing methodology, capture efficiency requirements and emission control criteria for vacuum cleaners as they relate to IAQ.

The air cleaning device subpart covers testing of air cleaners as they relate to indoor air quality. Initially, this subpart is intended to address portable air cleaners and in-duct air cleaners for residential and light commercial use.
