About us
UL is a premier global independent safety science company with more than 117 years of history.
Our business areas encompass Product Safety, Environment, Life & Health, Verification Services and Knowledge Services, with which we aim to meet the expanding needs of our customers and to achieve our mission to contribute to public safety.
Our Global reach and local commitment means we are able to find the right facility or engineer to suit your needs from our vast global resources, while accessing experts locally when needed.
Our Danish affiliate has a long history in that country. Originally established as Denmark’s Electrical Equipment Control (DEMKO) in 1928 by the Danish government, Demko was one of the founding members of the CENELEC Certification Agreement (CCA) Scheme, formed in 1977 for the mutual acceptance of test results between European countries.
Demko then joined the UL family of companies in 1996 through acquisition. Entirely independent from any government body today, UL international Demko A/S is our UL affiliate in Denmark and the National Certification Body (NCB) in that country, as well as a CBTL, accredited by DANAK.
As an NCB in Denmark, UL can facilitate many of the marks essential for Global market access, as well as voluntary marks that prove responsible commitment and give a competitive edge. We can help you to obtain many of the marks you need for access around the globe, and as an NCB, our Denmark affiliate is a facilitator and key gateway to European and global market access. UL not only has responsibility for testing of electrical products to the appropriate European or International safety standards but participates actively in the development of these European and International standards. This makes our Denmark facility a key location in UL’s global market access offering.
Just one example of the numerous marks UL can facilitate through Denmark is the D Mark, a voluntary safety Mark that has been in use for more than 70 years and is a familiar symbol to consumers, retailers and manufacturers in Europe. We can also provide the UL-EU Mark for similar Pan-European access. The UL-EU Mark is a voluntary certification Mark that indicates a product compliance with EN safety standards, applicable to all electrical and electronic devices and related components where an EN standard exists.
The wide range of products that can be tested in the state-of the art laboratory facilities in Denmark include Plastics, Printed Wiring Boards (or Printed Circuit Boards) , Information Technology equipment & Consumer electronics. This location is also designated in the European community as a Notified Body for all Group I (mining) and Group II (non-mining) equipment, protective systems and components. This Notified Body status allows Certificates of Conformity and Certificates of Component issued by UL Demko to be recognised by all European Community member states as a legal means of entry under the ATEX Directive.
The many and varied tests carried out here include gasket testing, IEC 60529 and UL 50 “IP test” - a short-circuit test up to 5KA.
UL maintains a contract with the Danish Safety Council to participate in the development of both Danish and global standards on behalf of the Council. The affiliate is also a founding member of the American Chamber of Commerce in Denmark.
The Denmark facility is a good example of ULs commitment to environmental responsibility and energy efficiency, as the first combined office and lab facility in Denmark to become LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Gold Certified.
