The role of the Fire Council

Council Members click here.

The Fire Council was formed in 1915 to advise UL on safety requirements for fire suppression equipment, fire resistant building designs, flame and smoke characteristics of building materials and other products related to fire safety. The Council also provides advice on the requirements for the installation of products and materials intended for use in accordance with codes.

Fire Council members are fully involved in the UL Standards development process, reviewing proposals for new and revised Standards and new product reports. Members are also asked to assist UL with educating the users on UL product safety certifications.

The Council meetings are excellent opportunities to discuss topics of interest with other Council members and UL staff. Members are urged to offer suggestions for the meeting agenda and share recommendations and comments.

UL's Fire Council Representatives are:
Tom Chapin, Chairman
Kerry Bell, Vice Chairman
Bob Backstrom, Administrator
Marianne D'Amore, Clerk
