Consumer representatives wanted for UL Standards Technical Panels

Since its founding in 1894, UL has played a key role in the development of the U.S. voluntary safety system. As the leading product safety certification organization in North America, UL employs an open process of standards development that uses the input of consumers, manufacturers, government agencies, regulatory authorities and other knowledgeable, interested parties to create effective product safety standards - at their earliest stage of development.

Crucial to the development of UL Standards for Safety is consumer input. UL is looking for consumer representatives to serve on its Standards Technical Panels (STPs), which are responsible for developing and maintaining UL's Standards for Safety.

UL's product safety standards help reduce death, injury and property loss," said Barbara Guthrie, director of UL Global Consumer Affairs. "This is an excellent opportunity for consumers to do their part and contribute to public safety through participation in UL's standards development process."

STP members review industry bulletins, attend standards development meetings, vote and comment on standards updates and revisions, and introduce a consumer perspective and human element to standardization.

Consumer advocates and product users interested in learning more about UL's Standards Technical Panels are encouraged to contact Barb Guthrie in Northbrook, Ill., USA, by phone at +1-847-664-3308; by fax at +1-847-313-3012; or by e-mail at Barbara.R.Guthrie@us.ul.com.
