The Official Gazette of Mexico had announced the enforcement of the new standard for food contact glass and ceramics. The standard is named NOM-231-SSA1-2016, Articles of Glass Pottery, Glass Ceramics, Porcelain and Glass Articles- Maximum Permissible Limits of Soluble Lead and Cadmium-Test Method.

The standard expands the scope of products to include food contact glass and establishes limits for the migration of lead and cadmium in these products. The standard covers any type of glazed or unglazed pottery or glassware, colored or not, with or without decoration.

Enforcement began on December 24, 2016.
