The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has issued international standards for cosmetics.

The standards are:

  • ISO 18415:2017 Cosmetics — Microbiology — Detection of specified and non-specified microorganisms 
    • This standard provides the general guidelines for the detection and identification of specified microorganisms in cosmetic products as well as for the detection and identification of other kinds of aerobic mesophilic non-specified microorganisms in cosmetic products.
    • Publication date: May 29, 2017
  • ISO 21148:2017 Cosmetics — Microbiology — General instructions for microbiological examination 
    • This standard provides the general instructions for carrying out microbiological examinations of cosmetic products, in order to ensure their quality and safety, in accordance with an appropriate risk analysis (e.g., low water activity, hydro-alcoholic, extreme pH values).
