France has started the enforcement of the two-year trial period for the mandatory country-of-origin labeling for meat and milk products. The enforcement date of the trial COOL started on January 1, 2017.

The COOL applies to 100 percent French meat or milk. These products shall be labelled with “Produit d’origine Francaise”.

The COOL also specifies that meat and milk products containing 8 percent or more meat or 50 percent or more milk must have the origins of those ingredients disclosed on their labels.

Specifically, the COOL must contain the countries of birth, breeding and slaughtering of animals for meat or collecting and packaging or processing for milk.

This new labeling requirement was finalized in August 2016.
